Minnesota Mallards (NAHL) – Volunteer Assistant Coach

The Minnesota Mallards are seeking a Volunteer Assistant Coach to join our junior hockey program for the upcoming season. This position is ideal for an aspiring coach looking to gain valuable experience in junior hockey while working alongside experienced coaches in a competitive, player-development-focused environment.

The successful candidate will assist with practices, games, video analysis, recruiting, and player development while contributing to a positive, competitive culture.

Position Summary

The Volunteer Assistant Coach will work closely with the Head Coach and Associate Head Coach to assist in the development of our players both on and off the ice. The ideal candidate has a strong hockey background, enjoys teaching the game, and has experience with video analysis to help enhance individual and team performance.

Responsibilities

• Assist with planning and conducting team practices.
• Provide on-ice instruction and individual skill development.
• Analyze game and practice video to support player development.
• Create video clips and presentations for team and individual review.
• Assist with pre-scouting and opponent video breakdown.
• Coach during games and support bench communication.
• Evaluate and recruit prospective players.
• Travel with the team for games, showcases, and league events as availability permits.
• Help foster a positive, disciplined, and professional team culture.
• Mentor players on and off the ice while supporting their advancement to higher levels of hockey.

Qualifications

• Previous coaching or playing experience at the junior, collegiate, or high-level amateur level is preferred.
• Experience with hockey video analysis software (Hudl, InStat, SportCode, LiveBarn, or similar platforms) is strongly preferred.
• Strong understanding of hockey systems and player development.
• Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
• Ability to work evenings, weekends, and travel during the hockey season.
• Self-motivated, dependable, and eager to learn.
• USA Hockey coaching certification (or willingness to obtain) is preferred.

Compensation

This is a volunteer position. Team apparel, meals during team travel (when applicable), and valuable junior hockey coaching experience will be provided.
